One of the most unique creatures found in Rwanda’s forests is the Golden Monkey, a rare and endangered species that can only be found in the Virunga Mountains. The golden monkey is a species endemic to the Virunga Massif region, making Rwanda one of the few places on earth where you can encounter these captivating primates up close. Known for their striking golden fur and lively demeanor, observing them in their native environment is a truly magical experience that will stay with you forever.

Golden monkey trekking in Rwanda allows you to observe these playful and curious primates in their natural habitat. The total population of golden monkeys is estimated to be around 3000 individuals. There are two habituated golden monkey communities for trekking every day, these communities have about 80 members each and the number of visitors is not limited.

The activity starts at volcanoes national park headquarters at 7:00 AM with briefing on dos and don’ts by the park wardens and later the park guides and rangers lead you to the forest to find them. You can walk for 30 minutes to hours depending on the location and movement of the golden monkeys, once you find them you are allowed to view and stay with them for only one hour before you return. 

The park comprises a rich tapestry of flora with the lower slopes adorned with Hagenia abyssinica trees, a variety of ferns, lobelia and senecio species. Besides the golden monkeys, the park houses buffaloes, colobus monkeys, spotted hyenas, black-fronted duiker, bushbuck among others. With over 178 bird species residing in the park, volcanoes is a birdwatching haven. Birding is well done during a forest walk where travelers enjoy them singing sweetly up in the trees. These include strange weaver, red-faced woodland warbler, Archer’s ground robin, dusky crimson-wind, Francolins, Rwenzori batis, Rwenzori double collared sunbird and Rwenzori Turaco among others.

The park experiences a temperate climate characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons. The climate in this region is characterized by a temperate atmosphere, thus offering comfortable conditions for an adventure in the jungle. The wet season typically occurs from March to May and October to November, bringing lush greenery and occasional rain showers. In contrast, the dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, offer clearer skies and cooler temperatures.

The average temperature ranges from 15 to 27oC, creating an ideal environment for the captivating biodiversity that calls this park home. The park is surrounded by vibrant communities whose livelihoods are intricately connected to the conservation efforts of Volcanoes National Park.

By midday, you will return to the park headquarters, participating in a post-trek debriefing. Share your awe-inspiring encounters with fellow adventurers.
