Upon your arrival at Kigali international airport you will be welcomed by a representative from African Safari Tour Holidays who will give you an overview of your safari and then start the journey to Nyungwe forest national park in the south western part of Rwanda. You will make a stopover at the King's Palace in Nyanza en route. Originally serving as King Mutara 111 Rudahigwa's residence, the palace is a masterfully constructed thatched home shaped like a beehive and provides breathtaking views of the long-horned Inyambo cattle. The long-horned cows were a significant part of important King-honoring ceremonies. Additionally, you will go to the museum to see collections of artifacts from African traditions. Following your tour of the King's Palace and Museum, you will have lunch before traveling to Nyungwe National Park, where you will check into a lodge, have dinner, and spend the night.
Following an early breakfast, you will meet your safari guide and head to the park headquarters for an overview about dos and don’ts of chimpanzee tracking safari. Following the briefing, you will be assigned a chimp family to trek with, a park guide who is familiar with forest trails, and begin trekking in the forest of Nyungwe. Chimpanzee tracking in Nyugwe forest lasts between 1 to 4 hours depending on their location on the tracking day.  During the tracking you will have a chance to witness other primate species like silver monkeys, red tailed monkeys, olive baboons, grey cheeked mangabey among others. Once the chimp family is located, you will be allowed to spend one hour with them in their natural habitat, where you will be able to learn more about their lifestyle, behaviors, and habits. Upon completing your hour-long experience with the chimpanzees, you will hike back to the park headquarters where you will meet your driver guide and head back to the lodge for lunch. After lunch, you will embark on an exciting 60-meter-long canopy walk above the forest. The two-hour canopy walk begins at the Uwinka Visitor Center and winds through enormous trees as it crosses a deep, steep valley covered in dense forest. The canopy walk offers breathtaking views of the Nyungwe Forest, the Virunga volcanoes, a variety of bird species, butterflies, and primates, including red-tailed, blue, and hoest monkeys, as well as black and white colobus and blue monkeys. Following the canopy walk, you will hike back to the starting point, to meet your safari guide to embark on your journey back to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Following an early breakfast, check out of your lodge and meet your safari guide to embark on your transfer to Volcanoes national park. The journey takes about 4 to 5 hours’ drive to reach the park. Along the way you will pass via Lake Kivu where you will witness the breathtaking views of the scenery and numerous bird species along the banks. You will also have lunch along the way as you explore the land of a thousand hills. You will reach the park in the late afternoon and check into your lodge for some refreshment before having dinner and a night rest.
Following an early breakfast, you will carry your packed lunch and embark on your journey to Kinigi park headquarters for a briefing about gorilla trekking. Following the briefing, you will be allocated a gorilla family to trek and also a park guide who is well conversant with the forest trails. Mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park begins around 8:00 a.m. and lasts between 2 and 8 hours, depending on where the gorillas are located on the trekking day. During gorilla trekking you will witness breathtaking vistas of various flora, birds, and other primates species. Once the gorilla group you are allocated is located you will have an hour to spend with them in their natural habitat. You will also have an opportunity to witness them as they are going through their daily activities like feeding, breastfeeding. It is also a great opportunity to take photos and record the moments to show people back home.
Following an early breakfast, you will meet your safari guide and transfer to the park’s headquarters for a briefing about golden monkey trekking. Just like gorilla golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes National Park is done once a day. Following the briefing you will be allocated an experienced park ranger guide to accompany during your trekking experience. During golden monkey trekking, you will follow fresh leftovers of bamboo shoots in order to track the amazing primate species. Once you allocate them you will have a one to spend with them in their nature habit. You'll be able to observe them jumping from one tree to another, learn about their lifestyle and behaviors, and take photos and videos. After an hour with the golden monkeys, return to the park headquarters to meet your driver guide for the transfer back to the lodge for lunch. After lunch, you will embark on an exciting cultural tour that will take you to the Iby’iwacu cultural village. During the cultural tour, you will be able to interact with the locals and learn about their culture, traditions, and way of life, as well as participate in their daily activities, taste their local dishes, enjoy their traditional dances, and listen to ancient stories, among other things. You will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight after the cultural tour.
After a leisurely breakfast on the final day of your safari, you will check out of the lodge and meet your driver guide to embark on your transfer to Kigali for a guided tour of the city. While in the city, you can visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial Center to learn about the horrific killings of Tutsis and Hutus in 1994, as well as the Kimironko Market to shop for clothing and souvenirs and engage with local vendors. Following the Kigali city tour, you will have lunch before embarking on your journey to the airport to catch your flight back to your home country.
